TWD-Grandma's All Occasion Sugar Cookies

Well, I missed out on quite a few Tuesdays with Dorie lately and I want to apologize to our hosts of the past few weeks for not making their chosen recipes. Isabelle of Les gourmandises d'Isa, Vibi of La casserole carrée and Noskos of Living the Life all had chosen great recipes and I promise to do a rewind of all three recipes (seperately!) at some point in time. Promise!

This week's recipe, Grandma's All Occasion Sugar Cookies, comes courtesy of Ulrike of Küchenlatein. I have to admit when I first saw sugar cookies I knew I'd have a few problems because I am not very patient with cut-out cookies. But then I read the recipe (duh!) and saw that there was a slice and bake option. Ahhh, slice and bake cookies. I love those. They were certainly invented for busy moms or by a busy mom, because they are time savers! You can make the dough when you have a few minutes, shape it into a log, throw it in the fridge for future use and when feel like/have time to bake you just slice and bake. Voilà! They can be baked in minutes when you need a lift when you're say, knee deep in gift wrapping and you think everyone will make it to Christmas on time except you. A few cookies, a tall glass of milk and you're back on track!

I found this recipe came together very easily. But then I have no other sugar cookie recipe to compare it with. They were my very first sugar cookies and they were delicious! This recipe is a keeper. It is begging to be tweaked though, as in adding some orange zest or finely chopped chocolate or nuts, or extracts of some kind. So many possibilities. And even if you just roll them in coarse sugar for a little crunch, you'll still get people to say "you made those yourself?!". Not too shabby for a few minutes' work. So visit the the rest of the TWD baking guys and gals to see how Dorie's recipe compared to their Grandma's recipes and if you'd like to try them yourselves, visit Ulrike's blog for the recipe!

I've never baked sugar cookies myself (only eaten them, hehe), and boy do I wish I had those in front of me right now as I watch SNL :) (All I have are these icky chips!) I love the festive jeweled edge-- it adds a lot for just a few seconds' work! :)

I'll have to try the slice-and-bake option next time. Having the dough ready to go in the fridge will be sooooooo nice when we have houseguests this month.

Superbe LyB!
Une très belle idée que de les avoir roulés dans les pépites: rapide pour un résultat spectaculaire!
La photo de la pile, vue de haut est réellement craquante!

That's so funny! I actually divided the dough into three parts (after doubling it) and have been breaking pieces off and rolling them since I made these (out of sequence) last week. The kids like to help ct them out although having a log looks easy. But I'm not loving the actual dough and am on a quest to find a better one.

The gilded edges look so lovely on your cookies. Slice and bake is generally my preferred method, but this week I felt patient enough to get out some cookie cutters.

What pretty little sugar cookies, and honestly, that's one of the sweetest little snowmen I have ever seen. He and the cookies look perfectly paired!

I'm with you -- I might never go back to cut out cookies after finally experiencing the ease of the slice and bake! And I think that your cookies are every bit as pretty and festive as the cut out ones. I love the red and green sprinkles on the edges! I agree that this recipe is a keeper.

I with you there...I'm not a fan of cut-out sugar cookies! Slice and bake though sounds great! I like to get the Pillsbury ones sometimes...if you eat them right out of the oven and you dont let them get soft...they are pretty good! I'd rather have yours! yummy! :)

Very pretty Lyb. Well you may be a bit behind on the rest of your Christmas prep, but at least you have homemade cookies to serve!

Your sugar cookies look just perfect. Thanks for the review of the recipe - it's always helpful to know ahead of time if a recipe works well or not.

I hate cut out cookies too, they take forever! Love the sugar border, I think slice and bake are definitely the way to go.

I like the idea rolling the dough in those colourful sugar. In Germany it's hard to find.

I too went with the slice and bake method. I wasn't in the mood and didn't have the time to do roll out/cookie cutter cookies.

Yours look really festive!

These are awesome, my first batch didn't quite turn out right, I think it is the altitude.
